Applying For The Ad Grant,
Step By Step.

The application has four stages and each one rejects people for a different reason. Done in the right order with the right documents ready, it takes a couple of hours of work spread over a few weeks of waiting. Done in the wrong order, it takes months.

Before you start

Two things need to be true, and fixing them afterwards is far more expensive than fixing them now.

Your charitable registration must be current, and the legal name must match your documents exactly. Not the trading name, not the rebrand — the name on the register. Mismatches here cause more verification failures than genuine ineligibility.

Your website must already meet the requirements. HTTPS, a clear mission, a donate page, a privacy policy, a contact page, substantial content, no advertising and no affiliate links. The full list is in is your nonprofit eligible, and the website is where most applications actually die.

Fix the website before applying, not after rejection. A rejection is not fatal, but it adds weeks and the reapplication is reviewed more carefully. A week spent on the site now is the highest-return week in the whole process.

Stage 1 — Google for Nonprofits

The Ad Grant sits inside Google for Nonprofits, so that account comes first.

  1. Go to Google for Nonprofits and request an account.
  2. Enter your country and your charitable registration number.
  3. Enter the organisation's legal name exactly as registered.
  4. Use an email address on your own domain. A Gmail address is accepted in some cases but a domain address avoids questions.

Use an account somebody will still have access to in three years — a shared or role-based address rather than a staff member's personal login. This is the address that later receives the annual programme survey, and losing access to it is a recurring cause of avoidable trouble.

Stage 2 — Verification

Google does not verify charitable status itself; it uses a verification partner, currently Goodstack. They check your registration against public records and may ask for supporting documents.

This is the stage that stalls most often, almost always over name or address mismatches rather than eligibility. What to have ready is covered in Goodstack verification: what goes wrong.

Expect days to a few weeks. Watch the inbox — requests for extra documents time out.

Stage 3 — Activate the Ad Grant

Once Google for Nonprofits is approved, the Ad Grant appears as a product you can enrol in.

  1. In the Google for Nonprofits dashboard, find Google Ad Grants and start enrolment.
  2. You will be asked to confirm your website and complete an eligibility form about how you intend to use the grant.
  3. Create a Google Ads account if you do not have one — do not add a payment method. A grant account is unbilled, and attaching billing to the wrong account causes confusion later.
  4. Submit for review.

Stage 4 — Build the account before it is approved

The part almost everybody skips. Google reviews the account you submit, and an empty one gives the reviewer nothing to approve.

Have in place before submitting:

  • At least two campaigns reflecting genuinely different areas of your work.
  • At least two ad groups per campaign, two active ads per ad group, and two sitelinks — the structural minimums.
  • Keywords of two words or more, specific, none generic.
  • Geographic targeting set to where you actually operate.
  • Conversion tracking installed. Not required for approval, and the single best thing you can have running from day one.

How long it takes

Realistically three to six weeks end to end for a straightforward application: a few days to submit Google for Nonprofits, one to three weeks for verification, then a week or two for the grant review. Complications — a name mismatch, a website change, a document request — add weeks each.

Nothing you do makes the queue move faster. What you control is how many rounds it takes, and that is decided before you submit.

After approval

The account starts on manual bidding at the $2.00 cap and will underspend from day one. That is expected. The first month is for confirming conversion tracking works and gathering enough data to move to Maximize Conversions, which is where the account actually starts competing.
