Google for Nonprofits is the account the Ad Grant lives inside. It also unlocks Google Workspace and YouTube's nonprofit programme. Set it up carelessly and you inherit problems that surface years later, usually when the person who created it has left.
Decide who owns it before you start
This is the decision that matters most and it takes two minutes.
The account should belong to a role, not a person. Use an address like
admin@ or digital@ on your own domain, with at least two people able
to access it. Not the digital officer's personal work address, and not a founder's Gmail.
Everything downstream depends on this: the annual programme survey, policy change notices, and re-verification requests all arrive here. An unread inbox is the single most common cause of avoidable Ad Grant trouble.
Migrating the owning account later is possible but tedious. Two minutes of thought now saves a half-day and a support ticket in three years.
What you need to hand
- Your country of registration.
- Your charitable registration number — the right one, if your country issues several.
- Your legal name exactly as it appears on the public register.
- Your registered address, which may differ from where you operate.
- A website on a domain you own, already meeting the website requirements.
The setup, in order
- Go to Google for Nonprofits and request an account.
- Select your country. This determines which programmes are available and cannot be changed casually later.
- Enter the registration number and legal name, copied from your register entry rather than typed from memory.
- Submit for verification. This goes to Google's verification partner — Goodstack — and takes days to weeks.
- Watch the inbox. Document requests expire.
- On approval, the dashboard shows the products you can enrol in. The Ad Grant is one of them and is a separate enrolment.
The other two products
Worth knowing about, because both are useful and neither costs anything.
Google Workspace for Nonprofits gives you email on your own domain, shared drives and calendars. If your organisation is currently running on personal Gmail accounts, this fixes the ownership problem across the board, not just for the Ad Grant.
YouTube Nonprofit Program adds link cards and donation features to your channel. Relevant if you already publish video; not a reason to start.
Enrol in Workspace first if you need domain email, because the Ad Grant application is smoother from a domain address.
Common setup mistakes
| Mistake | What it costs later |
|---|---|
| Personal Gmail as the owner | Access lost when that person leaves |
| Trading name instead of legal name | Verification failure, weeks of delay |
| Wrong country selected | Wrong programme availability, awkward to correct |
| Only one admin | Single point of failure on every future notice |
| Adding billing to the grant Ads account | Confusion between grant and paid spend |
After approval, before the grant
Google for Nonprofits approval is not the Ad Grant. It is the door. Enrolling in the grant is a separate step with its own review, and the account you submit gets looked at.
Use the waiting time to build the Ads account properly — campaigns, ad groups, ads, sitelinks, conversion tracking. That sequence is in applying step by step.
Housekeeping worth doing on day one
- Add a second admin.
- Put an annual reminder in a shared calendar to check the account and the survey.
- Record the login details wherever your organisation keeps credentials, so a successor can find them.
- Note the exact legal name and registration number you used, so re-verification years later matches.
